Chapter Fifteen

~<>~

KADY PLACED the boxes of incense cones she held in her arms on the shelf and sighed. “I’m glad you’re back. I need to talk to you about a few things,” she told Saffron. “Sasha’s covering the floor and it’s not too busy so why don’t we put on a pot of ginger tea.” Arm in arm, they walked to the shop’s back room.

Kady set out a couple mugs while Saffron scooped the fragrant loose tea into a tea-ball, placing it into an old, crackled blue and white china teapot Kady found during her backpacking trip to England.

“How did your trip to the hospital with Reen go?” Kady asked.

Saffron, Kady, and Reen had created and packaged up a load of treats for the sick children at Wisdom Harbor Children’s Hospital. Their delivery included knitted character hats and matching lap comforters from Reen, and coordinating animal and creature-shaped, hand-sized cookies from her sister Laila’s bakery. The cookies were wrapped in cellophane with tiny labels noting all ingredients. Laila made the large batch of cookies gluten-free as well as nut-free so kids with sensitivities or allergies could enjoy them without concern.

As time passed, Kady had become more aware of Saffron’s whimsical creative side. She’d designed the cutest six-inch-tall rag dolls for the kids. She kept them small so the children could hug them close when they went for tests or for doctor visits. She called the dolls Aunt Saffy’s Friends.

Saffron and Kady had put together a number of self-care kits for the nurses too, containing Kady’s herbal tea and herbed honey, two items that were a hit with family and friends, topping the miniscule list of healthful food items she prepared that didn’t make others cringe. The boxes also held decadent brownie bites from Laila’s bakery, and Cherished Pages business-card-bookmarks offering one free paperback or children’s book of their choice.

The small boxes were tied with satin ribbon and included little cards describing the contents. Saffron and Kady called their nurse gifts Just Because You’re Awesome, which was printed at the top of each card.

“It was wonderful,” Saffron said. “It might sound odd but the kids loved my little dolls so much it almost made me cry. I felt like a hero doing something that brought smiles to their sweet little faces.”

“Not odd at all,” Kady said. “I’ve experienced the same thing when I’ve made deliveries to the hospital with Reen. And I know she has too. Making those kids happy is the best, most gratifying feeling.”

“Absolutely. The kids even put in special requests for imaginative new doll designs for me to create. The most frequent one I got was for—”

“For dolls that looked like them,” was Kady’s educated guess.

“Yes! I asked each child to tell me what yarn hair color they want and what kind of clothes they’d like to see. I took photos of the kids so I could reference them while making the dolls. So,” she held out her palms, “we’ll see if I’m up to the task or not.
